Oculus Rift PC Requirements

So what are the requirements for a VR-ready, Oculus-capable gaming PC?

Oculus issued the below recommended specs to help you enjoy its Rift headset. If you meets these requirements you won’t have any problems getting into VR:

  • The minimum Intel CPU is an i5-4590, while AMD suggest a minimum of an eight-core FX-8350
  • Memory demands for the Oculus are 8GB of RAM, and Oculus recommends a minimum of a Nvidia GTX 970, or a AMD R9 290 graphics card – however, you should also check out the newer cards recently released by Nvidia and AMD, the [easyazon_link identifier=”B01IEA1IMQ” locale=”US” nw=”y” tag=”bestvrhardware-20″ cart=”y” localize=”y” popups=”y”]GTX 1060[/easyazon_link] and [easyazon_link identifier=”B01GX5Z4EM” locale=”US” nw=”y” tag=”bestvrhardware-20″ cart=”y” localize=”y” popups=”y”]RX 480[/easyazon_link] respectively, as well as the more powerful [easyazon_link identifier=”B01GX5YWAO” locale=”US” nw=”y” tag=”bestvrhardware-20″ cart=”y” localize=”y” popups=”y”]GTX 1070[/easyazon_link] and [easyazon_link identifier=”B01FWI6F08″ locale=”US” nw=”y” tag=”bestvrhardware-20″ cart=”y” localize=”y” popups=”y”]GTX 1080[/easyazon_link]
  • The Oculus Rift requires three USB 3.0 ports and one HDMI 1.3 video port to connect to, and the operating system of your PC  should be a 64-bit version of Windows 7 SP1, or later

Building a gaming PC is easier than many people realize. If you can build a Lego kit you can build a computer, it’s that easy.

Below I set out a VR-ready PC build that can get you gaming on the Oculus Rift for around $1,000.

Oculus Ready PC Build

As well as being a great system to enjoy VR, this is a decent gaming computer in its own right, perfect for playing Doom and Overwatch and anything else you fancy. It will allow you to max out most virtual reality titles currently available – and should stand you in good stead for the next couple of years.

The prices of components in this PC are subject to daily ups and downs, so remember to check back if you’re unsure of the price.

Also, these lists are for the ‘PC’ parts of the system only, and don’t include a keyboard, mouse or monitor.

$1,000 PC for the Oculus Rift

Overview

This build contains AMD’s RX 480 video card. The card is based on AMD’s brand new Polaris architecture and has been developed to make VR accessible on a budget. The card ranges from around $200 for a 4GB version, to around $240 for a beefier 8GB version.

This card will allow you to enjoy everything the Oculus Rift has to offer, and will also give you a gaming PC that’s capable of pushing all of the latest games at 1920×1080 monitor resolution. At a push it will even allow you to game at 2K resolutions (2560×1440), though frame rates will not be as good, and you’ll need to reduce detail settings in a lot of games.
